This project is about creating a co-working space to bring a lively community back to the previous industrial district near Chinatown, LA. As for the structure and material, I conducted cross-laminated timber (CLT) study as one of the most innovative building materials available in the market. The integrated technology studio examined why the architecture industry’s future is projected to link technologies such as CLT.
As I looked to creating spaces for the future, this project’s focus was on the user’s experience and creating hybrid, flexible mixed-use spaces with adaptability to different circumstances. From my perspective, the future of co-working space should be flexible. The boundaries of one activity end and another begins are blurred, playful, where unexpected, accidental events happen, and the users can write their own narratives providing greater work-life balance.
Therefore, I created a series of modular spaces and redefined the boundaries. The “accidental” space is flexible with blurred boundaries and can be used for multiple functions, and the “deliberate” space has a clear function and fixed physical boundaries.
