Over the last several years Los Angeles has seen an increase in wildfires, and the devastation of those fires has increased significantly. Therefore, for both fire-resistant and wildfire education purpose, this project is a Resilient Fire Command Post and Visitor Center located at Brown Mountain Fire Road Command Post sitting on the ridge line overlooking the Canyon Crest neighborhood in Altadena. It serves as an educational visitor center during normal season and in fire season it serves as a firefighting operation center.
The concept is Layering, both to site strategy and to building strategy. There are three layers of fire resistant approach: Detective probe on the periphery layer (<1000m); Protective firefighting platform on the middle layer(<250m); Defensive building envelop and underground shelter. The layers for landscape are different zonings with fire resistant vegetations, water collectors, and retaining walls. The layers for the building includes programable periphery and core refuge.
